Discuss how convergent evolution explains the distribution of species in similar but geographically distant habitats. Illustrate your explanation with an example. Members of a species that are better adapted to the environment have a better chance of reproduction, therefore the traits that make them successful in their environment are passed on to their offspring. An example would be birds and bats.
Describe how fossils are formed. Explain how their position in layers can be used to support evolutionary theory. Only the "hard parts" of an animal will be fossilized. The remains must be buried in sediment. The youngest fossils will be nearer to the surface, growing older with depth. Fossils can be dated by radioisotopes.
