Relationships

QuestionAnswer
Predation The act of one organism feeding on another, killing the organism it is feeding on.
Parasitism One organism feeds on and usually lives on or in another, usually larger organism, but does not often kill their prey (the host).
Symbiosis Two or more species live together in a close, long-term association. They can be good for both organisms, only one organism, or neither.
Mutualism A symbiotic relationship where both organisms benefit from being together.
Commensalism A symbiotic relationship where one species benefits and the other is neither harmed nor helped.
Competition When two species fight for the same resource (space, food, water, mates, etc.) and the resource is in short supply.
Niche The functional role an organism plays in the ecosystem. Where it lives, eats, and what it does.
