Terms describing the relationship of body parts with respect to body

| Define SUPERIOR | closer to the head or cranial region |
| define INFERIOR | farther away from the head or towards the caudal region |
| define ANTERIOR | toward the front of the body or the ventral region |
| define POSTERIOR | toward the back of the body or the dorsal region |
| define MEDIAL | towards the midline of the body |
| define LATERAL | away from the midline of the body |
| define PROXIMAL | closer in poximity to the trunk or point of attachment to the axial portion of body |
| define DISTAL | at a distance to the trunk or further from the attachment to the axcial portion of the body |
| define SUPERFICIAL | towards the surface of the body |
| define DEEP | toward the inside of the body and away from the body surface |
| define SAGITTAL PLANE | dividing the body into left and right sections in which forward and backward movements of the body occur |
| define ANTEROPOSTERIOR PLANE | another name for SAGITTAL plane and its definition |
| define CORONAL PLANE | another name for FRONTAL plane and its defintion |
| define FRONTAL PLANE | divides the body into anterior and posterior halves along which lateral movements of the body occur |
| define TRANSVERSE PLANE | divides the body into superior and inferior halves along which horizontal body movements occur when body is in anatomical position |
| define MEDIOLATERAL AXIS | the axis perpendicular to the saggital plane; also known as the frontal-horizontal axis |
| define ANTEROPOSTERIOR AXIS | the axis around which rotation in the frontal plane occurs; also known as the sagittal-horizontal axis |
| define LONGITUDINAL AXIS | the axis around which transverse plane rotation occurs; also known as the vertical axis |
