chapter 1
| level/system | definition |
|---|---|
| chemical level, atoms | the smallest of matter that participate in chemical reactions |
| cellular level, cells | the basic structural and functional units of an organism that are composed of chemicals |
| tissue level, tissues | groups of cells and the materials surrounding them that work together to perform a particular function |
| organ level, organs | structures that are composed of two or more different types of tissues |
| system level, system | related organs with common functions |
| organismal level, organism | all parts of the human body functioning together constitute the total organism |
| integumentary system | protects the body,helps regulate body temperature,eliminates some waste,detects sensations such as touch,pain, warmth,and cold |
| skeletal system | supports and protects the body, provides surface area for muscle attachments, aids in body movement |
| muscular system | participates in body movements such as walking, maintains posture |
| nervous system | regulate bodys activities, detects changes in bodys internal and external enviorments ,interprets changes and responds by causing muscular contractions or gland sucretions |
| endocrine system | regulate sbodys activitiesby releasing hormones |
| cardiovascular system | carries oxygen and nutrients to cells and carbon dioxide and wastes away from cells |
| lymphatic system | returns proteins and fluid to blood, carries lipids from gastrointestinal tract to blood |
| respiratory system | helps regulate acid base of body fluids, transfers oxygen from inhaled air to blood and carbon dioxide from blood to exhaled air |
| digestive system | achieves physical and chemical breakdown of food, absorbs nutrients, eliminates solid wastes |
| urinary system | eliminates wastes and regulates volume and chemical composition of blood, helps maintain the acid base balance of body fluids |
| reproductive system | gonads produce gametes that unite to form a new organism |
