Origin Theories

Marine Science Vocab

QuestionAnswer
Big Bang Theory Is a widely accepted theory for how material was created. All the matter was together in one small spot but then it started expanding and has been expanding ever since. The Big Bang is thought to have happened 13 billion years ago.
Galaxy a huge rotating aggregation of stars, dust, gas, and other debris held together by gravity.
Star A massive sphere of gas.
Nebulae clouds of dust and gas within a galaxy.
Condensation Theory/Nebular Theory Is how the solar system formed in a nebula that shrinks due to gravity and becomes so hot that two hydrogen molecules fuse. Energy is released during fusion and this hydrogen is the fuel for a star. The circling dust forms planets.
Accretion explains how debris circling a star collides with other debris and form larger objects that then collide with more debris and become larger. Gravity will help pull it all together.
Outgassing The volcanic ventilating of particles such as water vapor that had been trapped under the Earth's crust.
First Atmosphere Water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, ammonia, and methane were all gasses in the atmosphere. Their is no oxygen which is lucky because it breaks down organic matter.
First life Life started in tidal pools or deep ocean vents about 3.5 billion years ago and it was a simple bacteria like organism.
Timeline(life, oxygen, animals, fish, marine mammals, humans. Life 3.5 billion years ago, oxygen: 2 billion years ago, animals: 800 million years ago, marine mammals: 50 million years ago, and mankind: 3 million years ago

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
