QuestionAnswer
what is osmosis? The tendency of molecules of a solvent to pass through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated solution.
what is diffusion? Diffusion is the tendency of molecules to spread into an available space. Without other outside forces at work, substances will diffuse from a more concentrated environment to a less concentrated environment.
what does the word 'hypertonic' mean? The concentration of solute in the solution can be greater than the concentration of solute in the cells. The cell is in an hypertonic solution. (hyper = more than normal)
hypotonic? The concentration of solute in the solution can be less than the concentration of solute in the cells. The cell is in an hypotonic solution. (hypo = less than normal)
isotonic The concentration of solute in the solution can be equal to the concentration of solute in the cells. The cell is in an isotonic solution. (iso = same as normal)
facilitated diffusion? when a cell helps something pass through them membrane with proteins.
