Chap 6 Lesson 1

Photosynthesis

QuestionAnswer
Step 1 of the Light Energy cycle? Light energy forces an electron to enter a higher enery level. "excited"
Step 2 of the Light Energy cycle? The excited electron goes into the "primary electron acceptor.
Step 3 of the Light Energy cycle? The primary electron acceptor donates the electron and outs it into the Electron Acceptor Chain.
Step 4 of the Light Energy cycle? More light is shining on chlorophyll. A new (ETC)
Step 5 of the Light Energy cycle? The excited electron in the 2nd (ETC) is brought into the Stroma.
Define Heterotroph An organism that obtains organic food molecules by eating other organisms of their byproducts and that cannot synthesie organic compounds from inorganic materials
Define Granum A stack og thylakoid in a chloroplast
Define Electron Transport Chain A chain in the light energy cycle that electrons pass in a process that causes protons to build up on one side of the membrane
Define Light Reaction In photosynthesis, causes ADP and NADH to transfrom into ATP and NADPH
Define Thylakoid A membrane system found w/in chloroplast that contains the components for photosynthesis
Define Stroma The solution that surrounds the thylakoind in a chloroplast
Define Primary Electron Acceptor In chloroplasts, an acceptor of electron lost from chlorophyll a; found in the thylakoid membrane.
Define Photosystem In the thylakoid mem. of chloroplast, a cluster of chlorophyll and other pigment molecules that harvest light energy for the light reaction of photosynthesis
Define Photosynthesis Process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria use sunlight, CO2, water to produce carbohydrates and oxygen
Define Pigment A substance that gives another or other mixture its color
Define Antotrophs An organism that produces its own nutrients from inorganic substances or from the enviornment instead of counsuming other organisms
Define Chloroplasts An organelle found in plants and algae cells where photosynthsis occurs
Define Chlorophyll A green pignemt that is present in most plant cells, that give plants their characteristic green color and that react with sunlight, CO2, and water to form carbohydrates
Define Carotenoid A class of pigments that are present in the thylakoid membrane of plants and aid in photosynthesis
Define Chemiosmosis The production of carbohydrates through the use of energy from inorganic molecules instead of light
Chlorophyll A Absorbs RED pigments
Chlorophyll B Absorbs GREEN pigments
What is the equation for replacing electrons? 2H2O = 4H+ + 4e- + O2
What forms -electrons -protons -oxygen? WATER (H2O)
What makes up ATP? ADP + Phosphate

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
