QuestionAnswer
What three things do you find in the nucleus of a cell? DNA, chromosomes, and genes
What is the function of ribosomes? Protein synthesis
The cell membrane is composed of what two things? Proteins and lipids
What is the structure of the cell membrane, and where would you find water? Very fluid and selectively permeable; arranged in a lipid bilayer of phospholipids. Water is found inside and outside of the membrane.
What is active transport? Give examples. Transport proteins such as channel proteins and carrier proteins transfer neccesary materials from one side of the cell membrane to the other
Diffusion Moving from a a gradient of high concentration to low concentration
How do enzymes affect chemical reactions? Enzymes are catalysts for chemical reactions
Why do foods kept in the fridge last longer? The low temperature causes the enzymes to become denatured and the food cannot rot
What three things affect enzymes? Temperature, pH level, and concentration
What are the products and reactants of cellular respiration? Oxygen + Sugar ---> Carbon Dioxide + Water
What are the products and reactants of photosythesis? Water, Carbon dioxide ---> Carbs(Sugar), Oxygen
Autotroph Organism that can make its own food
What is the main product of cellular respiration? Sugar
What are the stages of the cell cycle? Interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, cytokinesis
Cancer Uncontrolled division of cells caused by error in DNA replication
What bases pair together? A & T, C & G
Why does every cell need a copy of DNA? Needed as genetic instructions
In mitosis, what would happen if cytokinesis did not take place? Cell material would not be properly divided and the cell could not divide
What are the characteristics of asexual reproduction? Single parent, no genetic diversity, two daughter cells, 100% of DNA from single parent
What is the ratio of the number of chromosomes produced by mitosis versus the number of chromosomes produced by meiosis? 1:2
Meiosis Cell division that results in two daughter cells, each with half the number of chromosomes as the parent
How many divisions does meiosis go through? 2
Are sperm cells haploid or diploid cells? Haploid
The sperm cells of a mouse contain 21 chromosomes. How many chromosomes would be found in a mouse's skin cells? 42
How does the number of chromosomes in body cells compare to the number of chomosomes in gametes? Gametes have half the number of gametes that body cells do.
What is the main advantage of sexual reproduction over asexual reproduction? Genetic diversity

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
