| Autotroph | An organism that produces it's own nutrients from inorganic substances. ex: Photosynthesis |

| Heterotroph | Organism that obtains organic food molecules by eating other organisms. |
| Homeostasis | The maintenance of a stable level of internal conditions even though the environmental conditions are constantly changing. |
| Multicellular | Describes a tissue,organ,or organism that is made up of more than one cell. |
| Unicellular | Describes a tissue,organ,or organism that is made up of one cell. |
| Organism | An independent individual that possesses all characteristics of life. |
| Reproduction | the process of producing offspring. |
| Sexual Reproduction | Reproduction in which gametes from two parents unite. |
| Development | The process by which an organism becomes a mature adult. ex: cell division, cell differentiation,and specialization |
| Metabolism | the sum of all the chemical reactions that take place in an organism. |
| Atom | The smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical properties of that element. |
| Atomic number | the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom |

| Chemical Reaction | The process by which one or more substances change to produce one or more substances. |
| Compound | substance made up of atoms or two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds. |
| Covalent bond | Forms when two atoms share one or more pairs of electrons.ex: H20 |
| Electron | a subatomic particle that has a negative charge. |
| Element | a substance that cannot be separated or broken down into a simpler substance by chemical means. |
| Ion | an atom,radical,or molecule that has gained or lost or more electrons and has a negative or positive charge. |
| Ionic bond | the attractive force between oppositely charged ions, which form when electrons are transferred from one atom to another. |
| Molecule | a group of atoms that are held together by chemical forces. |
| Activation Energy | the minimum amount of energy required to start a chemical reaction. |
