organism anything that possesses all of the characteristics of life
organization all living things show an orderly structure

stimulus anything that is part of either environment and causes some sort of reaction by the organism
response the reaction to a stimulus
homeostasis regulations of an organism's internal conditions to maintain life
adaptation any inherited characteristic that results from changes to a species over time
science a body of knowledge based on the study of the natural world
theory an explanation of a natural phenomenon supported by many observations and experiments over time
law describes relationships under certain conditions in nature
peer review a process by which the procedures and results of an experiment are evaluated by other scientists who are in the same field or who are conducting similar research
ethics a set of moral principles or values
observation a direct method of gathering information in an orderly way
interference the process of combining what you know with what you have learned to draw logical conclusions
scientific method methods that biologists use
hypothesis testable explanation of a situation
experiment investigating a phenomenon in a controlled setting to test a hypothesis
control group an experiment is used for comparison
experimental group the group exposed to the factor being tested
independent variable the only factor that can change
dependent variable the factor that results depend on the independent variable
constant a factor that remains fixed during an experiment while the independent and dependent variables change
data information gained from observations
metric system uses units with divisions that are powers of ten
