Bio Cell Vocabulary

My list of cell vocabulary words that are required for my test in 9th grade

QuestionAnswer
Plastid The site of the manufacturing and storing of chemical compounds.
Transport Protein Vital to the growth of all living things.
Ribosome Assembles 20 different molecules.
Golgi Apparatus Protein packer.
Cytoskeleton Stabilizes parts of the cell.
Chloroplast Holds chlorophyll and allows photosynthesis to take place.
Chlorophyll Gives color to plant cells.
Endoplasmic Reticulum(smooth) Detoxifies drugs and allows protein synthesis to take place. (not studded with Ribosomes).
Endoplasmic Reticulum(rough) Manufactures and transports proteins.
Fluid Mosaic Model The model of the membrane structure in which proteins are inserted in a phospholipid layer.
Multicellular An organism composed of one or more cells.
Unicellular An organism composed of one cell.
Selectively premeable Describing a barrier that allows some chemicals to pass through the phospholipid layer but not others.
Vacuole A membrane bound organelle that stores food, waste, and water / fluid.
Mitochondria Produces ATP and glucose which is used as a fuel.
Microfilament A solid tube - like structure that along with the microtubule, helps the cell with movement.
Microtubule A tube - like structure that allows the cell to move and provides structure.
Flagella Moves in a whip - like formation that allows the cell to move faster.
Cytoplasm The liquid inside the cell that allows the organelles to move in the cells.
Prokaryote A single celled organism that does not have a distinct nucleus covered by a membrane or specialized organelles.
Cytoskeleton Gives the cell shape and coherence.
Cell wall A rigid layer (made of polysaccharides) on the outside of the plasma membrane.
Phospholipid The lipid that makes up the cell wall.
cell The basic unit of all living things.
Organelle A specialized structure that carries out a certain function within the cell.
Plasma (cell) membrane Regulates the passage of molecules in and out of the cytoplasm.
Cilia Short, hairlike vibrating structures that allow the cell to move about.
