Impact of Genomics

QuestionAnswer
amino acid ? Any of a class of 20 molecules that are combined to form proteins in living things. The sequence of amino acids in a protein and hence protein function are determined by the genetic code.
what are allogeneic ? Variation in alleles among members of the same species.
what is adenine ? A nitrogenous base, one member of the base pair AT (adenine-thymine).
what is cell ? The basic unit of any living organism that carries on the biochemical processes of life.
what is chromosome ? The self-replicating genetic structure of cells containing the cellular DNA that bears in its nucleotide sequence the linear array of genes.
what is cloning ? Using specialized DNA technology to produce multiple, exact copies of a single gene or other segment of DNA to obtain enough material for further study.
what are cytosine ? A nitrogenous base, one member of the base pair GC (guanine and cytosine) in DNA.
DNA replication ? The use of existing DNA as a template for the synthesis of new DNA strands. In humans and other eukaryotes, replication occurs in the cell nucleus.
what does domiant do ? An allele that is almost always expressed, even if only one copy is present.
what is the twisted ladder shape that has two liner strands ? Is a double helix
Cell or organism with membrane-bound, structurally discrete nucleus and other well-developed subcellular compartments ? Eukaryotes .
Mature male or female reproductive cell (sperm or ovum) with a haploid set of chromosomes (23 for humans)? Gamete .
Gene expression ? The process by which a gene's coded information is converted into the structures present and operating in the cell.
The sequence of nucleotides, coded in triplets (codons) along the mRNA, that determines the sequence of amino acids in protein synthesis ? Is genetic code .
what is the defenition for term ? All the genetic material in the chromosomes of a particular organism; its size is generally given as its total number of base pairs.
A nitrogenous base, one member of the base pair GC (guanine and cytosine) in DNA ? it's guanine .
whats the term for haploid ? A single set of chromosomes (half the full set of genetic material) present in the egg and sperm cells of animals and in the egg and pollen cells of plants.
The offspring of genetically different parents ? it is hybrid.
whats interphase ? The period in the cell cycle when DNA is replicated in the nucleus; followed by mitosis.
The process of two consecutive cell divisions in the diploid progenitors of sex cells ? its called meiosis .
whats called mitosis ? The process of nuclear division in cells that produces daughter cells that are genetically identical to each other and to the parent cell.
The study of macromolecules important in biological inheritance ? Molecular genetics.
what is a mutation in DNA ? Any heritable change in DNA sequence.
The cellular organelle in eukaryotes that contains most of the genetic material ? it;s called nulceus .

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
