Adenosine triphosphate Adenosine is a purine nucleoside comprising a molecule of adenine attached to a ribose sugar molecule.
autotroph An autotroph[α],(self-feeding) or producer, is an organism that produces complex organic compounds.
heterotroph is an organism that cannot fix carbon and uses organic carbon for growth
photosynthesis is a chemical process that converts carbon dioxide into organic compounds, especially sugars, using the energy from sunlight.
pigment a material that changes the color of reflected or transmitted light as the result of wavelength-selective absorption
chlorophyll is a green pigment found in almost all plants.
thylakoid A membrane-bound compartment inside chloroplasts and cyanobacteria.
stroma the connective, functionally supportive framework of a biological cell, tissue, or organ
NADP Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate.
light-dependent reactions first stage of photosynthesis.
light-independent reactions chemical reactions that convert carbon dioxide and other compounds into glucose.
photosystem functional and structural units of protein complexes
electron transport chain electron transfer between an electron donor (such as NADH) and an electron acceptor (such as O2) with the transfer of H+ ions (protons) across a membrane.
ATP synthase important enzyme that provides energy for the cell to use through the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate.
Calvin cycle a series of biochemical redox reactions that take place in the stroma of chloroplasts in photosynthetic organisms.
