Vocabulary Bio 1

Pigment Light absorbing molecules used by plants to capture sunlight
Chlorophyll A pigment that absorbs light and gives plants their green color.
Thylakoid Sack like membranes inside of chloroplasts
Stroma The fluid portion of the chloroplast
NADP+ Compound that accepts and holds 2 high-energy electrons, along with a hydrogen ion
Light-dependent reactions Require light to perform actions
Light-independent reactions Don't require light to perform actions
Photosynthesis The process by which autotrophs use the energy of sunlight to produce sugar and starches that can be used as food
ATP synthase A protein in the thylakoid mebrane that allows H+ ions to pass through it
Electron transport chain a series of electron carrier proteins that shuttle high-energy electrons during ATP-generating reactions
Calvin cycle light-independent reactions
Adenosine triphosphate Important component cells use to store and release energy
Heterotroph Organisms that obtain food by consuming other living things
Autotroph Organisms that make their own food
Photosystem Clusters of chlorophyll and proteins inside thylakoids
