Bio Ch. 8 Vocab

The vocabulary for Bio 1

QuestionAnswer
adenosine triphosphate multifunctional nucleoside triphosphate used in cells as a coenzyme
heterotroph organisms that get their energy from other organisms
autotroph organisms that get their energy through photosynthesis or chemosynthesis
photosynthesis a chemical process that converts carbon dioxide into organic compounds, especially sugars, using the energy from sunlight
pigment A pigment is a material that changes the color of reflected or transmitted light as the result of wavelength-selective absorption
chlorophyll a green pigment found in almost all plants, algae, and cyanobacteria
thylakoid a membrane-bound compartment inside chloroplasts and cyanobacteria
stroma the connective, functionally supportive framework of a biological cell, tissue, or organ
NADP a coenzyme used in anabolic reactions, such as lipid and nucleic acid synthesis, which require NADPH as a reducing agent
light-dependent reactions the first stage of photosynthesis, the process by which plants capture and store energy from sunlight
light-independent reactions chemical reactions that convert carbon dioxide and other compounds into glucose
photosystem functional and structural units of protein complexes involved in photosynthesis that together carry out the primary photochemistry of photosynthesis
ATP synthase an important enzyme that provides energy for the cell to use through the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP)
electron transport chain couples electron transfer between an electron donor (such as NADH) and an electron acceptor (such as O2) with the transfer of H+ ions (protons) across a membrane
Calvin cycle a series of biochemical redox reactions that take place in the stroma of chloroplasts in photosynthetic organisms

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
