Theory of Evolution

QuestionAnswer
What did Alfred Russel and Charles Darwin do? Formulated a theory as to how the many species could have arisen
What is natural selection? A process by which organisms with traits well suited to an environment survive and reproduce at a greater rate than organisms less suited to that environment
What is overproduction? A species produces more offspring than will survive to maturity
What is genetic variation? The individuals within the species population are all genetically slightly different from each other
What is struggle to survive? Individuals of the population must struggle to avoid predators and find food and shelter
What is successful reproduction? Individuals that are successful at surviving are able to reproduce and pass on its genes to its offspring
What is diversity? Either the number of different characteristics present in a population or the number of different species in an area
What is adaptation? A characteristic that helps an organism survive in its own environment by adapting to its surroundings
What is speciation? The process by which two populations of the same species becomes so different that they can no longer interbreed
What is extinction? The process of a species dying out completely
What is biodiversity? Stability in ecosystems and biomes
What is selective breeding? The breeding of organisms that have a certain desired trait
What is genetic engineering? The manipulation of genes that allow scientists to put genes from one organism to another
What is adaptation? Structures and behaviors for finding food, for protection, and for moving from place to place
What are the three steps in speciation? Separation, adaptation, and division
What is separation? Different groups of the same species become isolated from one another
What is adaption? The groups adapt to different environments
What is division? Over a long period of time, the divided groups evolve into different species that are no longer able to breed with one another
What is extinction? Occurs when environmental changes and adaptive characteristics are insufficient to permit survival
Earth's original atmosphere was what? Anaerobic
What are traits? Height, color, or body shape
What causes traits? Mutations and genetic recombination
What is natural selection? When an organism chooses where they live

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
