Sex. & Asex. Rep.

Sexual & Asexual Reproduction

QuestionAnswer
The series of events that cells go through to grow and divide is known as the _______. Cell Cycle.
Cell division is when a cell ___. Divides itself.
The cell division of prokaryotic cells is known as ___. Binary fission.
Before a cell divides it has to copy or ___ its DNA. Replicate.
What is asexual reproduction? Reproduction where there is a single parent that has genetically identical offspring.
The cell division that eukaryotic cells go through is known as ____. Mitosis.
Before a cell divides it goes through a long period of growth known as ___. Interphase.
Mitosis has four phases, so what are the names of those phases? Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.
What happens during prophase? The DNA turn to chromosomes, nuclear envelope disappears, and a pair of centrioles start to form.
What happens during metaphase? Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell, and the spindle fibers from the centrioles connect to them.
What happens during anaphase? The spindle breaks the chromosomes and moves them to opposite sides of the cell.
What happens during telophase? The nuclear envelope starts to form again, the spindle breaks apart, and the cytoplasm starts to divide.
After the cell goes through mitosis it goes through a process to divide its cytoplasm, which is known as __. Cytokinesis.
What are the names of the three phases of interphase? G1, S, and G2.
What does mitosis produce? Mitosis produces two genetically identical cells.
For cytokinesis in plants to work a ___ is used to divide the cell. Cell plate.
What is sexual reproduction? A process in which to different cells unite to make a new organism.
During sexual reproduction to cells unite in a process known as ___. Meiosis.
How many cell divisions does a cell go in meiosis. Two.
What is meiosis. The process in which a cell with two sets of chromosomes (diploid cell) is divided to four cells with one set of chromosomes (haploid cells).
What does meiosis produce? A diploid cell is divided to four haploid cells with half the DNA of the diploid cell and that are genetically different.
What are gametes? Sex cells.
What are the two sex cells that join during meiosis? Egg and sperm cells.
When egg and sperm cells join they make a ___. Zygote.
What are the differences between meiosis and mitosis? Meiosis is more complex and there is more genetic diversity in it than mitosis, but mitosis happens a lot faster than meiosis.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
