| light source | also called the illuminator, this protects light upwards through the diaphram to allow the speciman to be viewed |
| coarse adjustment knob | move the stage up and down to help you get thye specimans into view; first know you adjust |
| fine adjustment knob | moves the stage slightly to help you "fine" tune your view of the specimen |

| total magnafication | the power of the ocular lens multiplied by the power of the objective lens |
| dry mount slide | slide used for viewing objects that are not wet and can not use a coverslip |
