Sexual & Asexual Rep

QuestionAnswer
What is mitotic division? The normal process that body cells use to grow new tissue or repair existing tissue
During mitosis cells divide to form into what? Two daughter cells that are identical to the parent cell and to each other
The number of chromosomes remains the same as in what? The parent cell
What are the steps of mitosis in order? 1.Interphase 2.Prophase 3.Metaphase 4.Anaphase 5.Telophase
What is the meiotic division? Only occurs in eukaryotic cells is the process through which gametes or spores are produced
A form of cell division occurs that what? Produces haploid daughter cells with of the species usual number of chromosomes
What are gametes? Aid organisms in their sexual reproduction
What are the steps of meiosis in order? 1.Prophase I 2.Metaphase I 3.Anaphase I 4.Telophase I 5.Prophase II 6.Metaphase II 7.Anaphase II 8.Telophase II
Meiosis produces what? Four daughter cells that are genetically diverse
What is crossing over? Unique to meiosis occurs during prophase I when two chromosomes pair up and exchange parts of their DNA
Crossing over provides what? Genetic diversity between the parents and the offspring
When does genetic variation occur? When alleles are randomly sorted during meiosis
When do mutations occur? Whenever a segment of DNA is inserted, deleted, or substituted
Mutations create changes in an organism's what? Phenotype or the phenotype of its potential offspring
What are silent mutations? When a mutation occurs but has no affect on the organism
Mutations will only be passed to the offspring if what? If the mutation occurs in the sex cells or gametes
What is reproduction? The process by which an organisms passes its genetic information to its offspring
What are the two main types of reproduction? Sexual and asexual reproduction
What happens during asexual reproduction? An organisms an identical copy of itself
How many parents are required for asexual reproduction? One and the offspring will be identical
Sexual reproduction is generally used by what? Simple organisms like humans
What do sexually reproducing organism produce? Gametes
How many parent are required for sexual reproduction? Two and the offspring is not identical
What is fission? A single celled organism that divides into two

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
