What is cell division? The process in which a cell divides into two new daughter cells.
What is asexual reproduction? The cells are genetically identical.
What is sexual reproduction? Involves two separate parent and produces genetically different cells.
What is a chromosome? Threadlike structure of DNA and protein that contain genetic information?
What is a chromatin? Substance found in eukaryotic chromosomes that consists of DNA tightly coiled around histones.
What is the cell cycle? Series of events in which a cell grows, prepares for division, and divides to form two daughter cells.
What is interphase? period of cell cycle between cell divisions.
What is mitosis? Part of eukaryotic cell division during which the cell nucleus divides.
What is cytokinesis? division of the cytoplasm to form two separate daughter cells.
What is prophase? First and longest phase of mitosis in which the genetic material inside the nucleus condenses and the chromosomes become visible.
What are centromeres? region of a chromosome where the two sister chromatids attach.
What is chromatid? one of two identical "sisters" parts of a duplicated chromosomes.
What is centriole? Structure in an animal cell that helps to organize cell division
What is metaphase? Phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes line up across the center of the cell.
What is anaphase? Phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes separate and move to opposite ends of the cell.
What is telophase? Phase of mitosis in which the distinct individual chromosomes begin to spread out into a tangle of chromatin.
What is cyclin? One of a family proteins that regulates the cell cycle in eukaryotic cells.
What is growth factor? Stimulates the growth and division of cells.
What is apoptosis? A process of programmed cell death.
What is cancer? a disorder in which body cells lose the ability to control growth.
What is a tumor? A mass of cancer cells.
What is an embryo? developing stage of a multicellular organism
what is differentiation? The process by which cells become specialized.
What are stem cells? They sit at the base of a branching "stem" of development from which different cell types form.
