Theory of Evolution
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| 1. Evolution | change in a kind of organism over time; process by which modern organisms have descended from ancient organisms |
| 2. Charles Darwin | English natural scientist who formulated a theory of evolution by natural selection (1809-1882) |
| 3. species | group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring |
| 4. extinction | no longer in existence |
| 5. competition for resources | Part of the theory of natural selection. Occurs because there are more organisms in a community than there is food & shelter to support them. |
| 6. natural selection | process by which individuals that are better suited to their environment survive and reproduce most successfully; also called survival of the fittest |
| 7. genetic variation | The variety of different types of genes in a species or population. |
| 8. struggle for existence | Part of the theory of natural selection. Occurs because there is competition for resoruces. |
| 9. reproduction | the process of generating offspring |
| 10. hereditary traits | characteristics that are inherited from our ancestors via DNA |
| 11. carrying capacity | largest number of individuals of a population that a environment can support |
| 12. asexual reproduction | process by which a single parent reproduces by itself |
| 13. sexual reproduction | process by which cells from two different parents unite to produce the first cell of a new organism |
| 14. limiting factors | environmental factors that restrict population growth |
| 15. recombination | a combining of genes or characters different from what they were in the parents |
| 16. acquired trait | characteristic that an organism develops after it is born |
| 17. clone | an exact duplicate |
| 18. gamete | |
| 19. ovum | egg cell |
| 20. mutation | change in a DNA sequence that affects genetic information |
| 21. survival of the fittest | a natural process resulting in the evolution of organisms best adapted to the environment |
| 22. gene frequency | how often a particular gene occurs in the population |
| 23. adaptations | traits that improve an individual's ability to survive and reproduce |
| 24. Prokaryote | unicellular organism lacking a nucleus |
| 25. Eukaryote | A cell that contains a nucleus and membrane bound organelles |
