Photosynthesis & Respiration

QuestionAnswer
What do catabolic pathways do? Break down organic molecules for energy
What do anabolic pathways do? Build up organic molecules to store energy for later use
What is the equation for aerobic respiration? C6H12O6 + 6O2 + 6H2O --> 6CO2 + 12H20 + energy (ATP)
What is the equation for photosynthesis? 6CO2 + 12H2O + energy (light) --> C6H12O6 + 6O2 + 6H2O
What is ATP? Adenosine Triphosphate
What does ATP do? Gives off energy to cells
What is ATP made up of? Adenine, Ribose(sugar), and three phosphate groups.
Living things that get food by eating other living things are known as. Heterotrophs
Living things that make their own food are known as. Autotrophs
What is photosynthesis? The process by which autotrophs use the energy of sunlight to produce high-energy carbohydrates(sugars and starches) that can be used as food.
What happens during photosynthesis? Plants change the energy of sunlight into chemical energy stored in the bonds of carbohydrates.
Plants gather the sun's energy with light absorbing molecules called? Pigments
What role do pigments play in the process of photosynthesis? Living things that carry out photosynthesis use pigments to get energy from sunlight.
Where does photosynthesis take place? In the chloroplasts.
What are the two stages of photosynthesis? Light-dependent reactions and light-independent reactions.
What happens during the light-dependent reactions? The light-dependent reactions use water and energy from sunlight to make oxygen and change ADP and NADP into the energy carriers ATP and NADPH.
What happens during the light-independent reactions? ATP and NADPH are used to make high-energy sugars.
What factors affect photosynthesis? Temperature, light intensity, and the availability of water.
Where do organisms get energy? From food
What is cellular respiration? The process that releases energy from food when oxygen is present.
What is the equation for cellular respiration? Oxygen + Glucose --> Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy(ATP)
What is aerobic respiration? A process of respiration that requires oxygen
What is anaerobic respiration? A process of respiration that does not require oxygen
What is fermentation? The process by which cells release energy in the absence of oxygen.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
