Cells

QuestionAnswer
What are cells? What living things on earth are made of. They are microscopic structures
What are organelles? Smaller pieces in the cell.
Organelles are also called what in the cell? The "organs."
What is on thing that is in the plant cell and not the animal cell? The cell wall.
What is one thing that is in the animal cell but not in the plant cell? Lysosome.
What is another thing that is in the plant cell that isn't in the animal cell? Chloroplast.
What is something that is big in the plant cell but small in the animal cell? The vacuole.
What is the cytoplasm? A suspension fluid that houses the other organelles.
What is the cell membrane? Acts as a boundary layer around the cytoplasm thus separation cells from their outside environment.
What is the cell wall? A secretion of the cell membrane; it provides protection from physical injury, and with the vacuole, it provides structural support.
What is a vacuole? Stores water and ingested food in a fluid sack.
What are lysosomes? Contains enzymes specialized to break down injested materials, secretions, and wastes.
What is a golgi apparatus? Processes, sorts, and modifies proteins in cells
What is the nucleus? The "brain" of the cell. controls everything.
What is chromatin? Composes of long, thin strands of DNA which contains "instructions" that control cell metabolism and heredity.
What is ribosomes? RNA and proteins complexes that are found in all cells.
What is mitochondria? Takes in nutrients, break them down and create energy for the cell.
What are chloroplasts? The food producers in a plant cell
What is endoplasmic reticulum? They transport chemicals between and within the cells.
What is the lowest level of organization? The cell
What is a tissue? Interconnected cells
What is a organ? A group of tissue that work together to perform a specific function
What is a organ system? The fourth, and highest, level or organization.
What are the various levels of organization? Cells--> tissues--> organs--> organ systems.
