Cells
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What are organisms made up of? | Cells |
| What does everything that lives have? | Everyone has cells |
| What do cells constist of? | organelles |
| What are organelles? | are like the “organs” of a cell; they are groups of complex molecules that help cells survive |
| What is an example of an organelle? | Cell membrane, cell wall, cytoplasm, vacuole, mitochondrion, endoplasmic reticulum, nucleus and chloroplast |
| What is the cytoplasm? | is a suspension fluid that houses the other organelles |
| What is the cell membrane (or plasma membrane) | acts as a boundary layer around the cytoplasm thus separating cells from their outside environments |
| Whatdoes the cell membrane do? | controls which molecules enter and leave the cell |
| What enters first through the cell membrane? | Nutrients |
| What is a cell wall? | it provides protection from physical injury, and with the vacuole, it provides structural support. |
| What is a vacuole? | stores water and ingested food in a fluid sack |
| What does the vacuole do? | It also removes waste from cells and produces turgor pressure against the cell wall for cellular support |
| What are lysosomes? | contain enzymes specialized to break down ingested materials, secretions, and wastes |
| What are Golgi apparatus? | wastes (and other materials) may then be processed and transported out of the cell |
| What do golgi apparatus do? | processes, sorts, and modifies proteins in cells. |
| What is the nucleus? | is like the “brain” of the cell. It contains chromosomal information on chromatin. |
| What is the chromatin? | composed of long, thin strands of DNA which contains “instructions” that control cell metabolism and heredity |
| What is a Ribosomes? | are RNA and protein complexes that are found in all cells |
| What do ribosomes do? | help cells during protein translation by joining amino acids together to form polypeptides. |
| What is the Mitochondria? | act like a stomach for the cell; they take in nutrients, break them down and create energy for the cell |
| What is the Chloroplasts? | are the food producers in a plant cell |
| What is the endoplasmic reticulum? | transports chemicals between and within cells |
| What is the lowest level of organization? | The cell |
| What is the nest level of organization? | Tissue. |
