Organic molecules

QuestionAnswer
What is a molecule? A groupd of atoms that is held together by covalent bonds.
What is an organic molecules? The bonding occurs between two or more carbon atoms.
What is a macromolecules? Groups of molecules that are joined together.
What are four main macromolecules of life? Carbohydrates, nucleic acids, lipids, and protein.
What is a carbohydrate? Organic macromolecules that are made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms.
What is the combined ratio of a carbohydrate? 1 carbon atom : 2 hydrogen atoms : 1 oxygen atom.
What is a monosaccharide? Simple carbohydrates
What is a polysaccharides? Monosaccharides can be combined to form more complex carbohydrates.
What are nucleic acids formed from? Nucleotides.
What are two types of nucleic acids? RNA and DNA
What does RNA stand for? Ribonucleic acids
What does DNA stand for? Deoxyribonucleic acids
What sugar does RNA contain? Ribose
What sugar does DNA contain? Deoxyribose
What are the five nitrogenous bases? Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine, Thymine, and Uracil.
What nitrogen base is only found in DNA? Thymine.
What nitrogen is only found in RNA? Uracil.
What is a lipid? Long storage of fats.
What are fats? The most important lipid
What is triglycerides made up of? 1 Glycerol molecule and 3 Fatty Acids.
What is a saturated fat? Doesn't contain any double bonds
What is a unsaturated fat? Contains some carbon-carbon double bonds.
What is a major source of energy? Fats.
What are examples of saturated fats? Butter, cheese, chocolate, beef, and coconut oul.
What are examples of unsaturated fats? Olives and olive oil, peanuts and peanut oil, fish, and mayonnaise.
