Enzymes.

QuestionAnswer
What are enzymes? Proteins that act as catalyst in living things.
How do enzymes work? By decreasing the amount of energy needed to activate the chemical reaction.
What are substrates? Specific enzymes to act on specific substances.
What are active sites? Where the enzymes go.
What happens if the shape of an enzyme is changed? It will not function as well or at all.
What two things can affect the shape of an enzyme's active site? 1.Temperature 2. pH range
What is RNA polymerase? An enzyme that is essential to the process of transcription.
What is a chemical reaction? A process that changes one set of chemicals into another.
What happens to chemical bonds during chemical reactions? Some bonds are broken and other bonds are formed.
What is activation energy? The energy needed to get a reaction started.
how do energy changes affect whether a chemical reaction will happen? Chemical reactions that give off energy often happen on their own.
What is a catalyst? A substance that speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction.
What role do enzymes play in living things? Enzymes speed up chemical reactions that take place in cells.
What is the saying for an enzyme? "Lock and key"
Can enzymes control obesity? Yes.
What are the most important characteristics of enzymes? The production of needed molecules in a cell
What amount of catalyst is consumed in the reaction it catalyzes? Catalysts are not consumed in the reactions they catalyze.
What are reactants? The element or compounds the enter into a chemical reaction
What are products? The elements or compounds produced by a chemical reaction.
What are the enzyme and substrates held together by? Intermolecular forces.
If enzymes are not used during a chemical reaction, how do they speed up the rate of the reaction? By providing an active site.
What temperature does enzymes destroy? 45-50 Celsius
What is the optimum temp. for humans? 37 Celsius
What is the optimum temp. for plants? 25 Celsius

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
