Chapter 10 Tst

QuestionAnswer
What happens as a cell grows? more demands are placed on DNA, food and oxygen are used up more quickly, and the cell has more trouble moving enough materials across its cell membrane
what happens to the volume of a cell when length increases? the volume increases by 100 times whatever the length increases
the speed with which wastes are produced by a cell depends on the cells: volume
unlike small cells, large cells have more trouble: moving needed materials in and waste products out
what is cell division? the process by which a cell divides into 2 daughter cells
if a normal cell divides, what can you assume about surface area? it has grown to its full size
what would happen to a cell's DNA were not copied before cell division? it would have a DNA overload
what happens when a cell divides? each daughter cell receives its own copy of the parent cells DNA
what are the phases of the cell cycle? interphase, mitosis, cytokinesis
What takes place in interphase and what does each do? G1- normal cell activity, S- cell copies its DNA, G2- makes copies of organelles
what takes place in mitosis and what does each do? prophase- nucleolus and nuclear membrane disappear, chromatin starts coiling, metaphase- chromosomes line up in middle, anaphase- chromosomes pull apart at the centromere, telophase- nucleus divides, nucleolus reappears, chromosome uncoil
what happens during cytokinesis? cytoplasm divides
what does the cell look like during mitosis? all divisions are occurring and it is the smallest part
during which phase of mitosis are chromosomes visible? metaphase and prophase
what are the phases of mitosis? prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase
what is a difference between cell division in plants and animals? plant cells form a cell plate down the middle of the cell wall
during normal cell division, a parent cell having four chromosomes will produce tow daughter cells each containing: 4 chromosomes
how many pairs of chromosomes do we have? 23 pairs
how is the timing of the cell cycle regulated in eukaryotic cells? by cyclins, growth factors, P53
what is cancer? uncontrolled cell growth
what are the phases of interphase? G1, S, G2
if a cell has 5 chromosomes in G1 how many chromatids will it have during G2? 10
what is the difference between chromatids and chromosomes? chromatids- 2 identical strands joined by a centromere chromosomes- material that makes up chromosomes
be able to do a diagram interpretation problem on the phases of mitosis

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
