Impact of Genomics
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Inheritance | a contribution that determines our blood type, the color of our hair, and so much more |
| Genetics | the study of heredity |
| Fertilization | the process in which male and female reproductive cells join together |
| Trait | a specific characteristic of an individual |
| Hybrid | the cross between 2 organisms with different traits |
| Probability | the likelihood that a particular event will occur |
| Homozygous | organisms that have 2 identical alleles for a particular gene Ex. TT or tt |
| Heterozygous | organisms that have 2 different alleles for the same gene Ex. Tt |
| Phenotype | physical traits |
| Genotype | genetic makeup |
| Incomplete Dominance | cases in which one allele is not completely dominant over the other |
| Codominance | cases in which the phenotypes for both alleles are present |
| Multiple Alleles | genes that have more than 2 alleles |
| Polygenic Genes | traits that are controlled by 2 or more genes |
| Homologous | each of the four chromosomes from the male parent have a corresponding chromosome from the female parent |
| Diploid | a cell that contains both sets of homologous chromosomes |
| Haploid | a cell that only contains one set of chromosomes |
| Meiosis | a process in which the chromosomes are cut in half through the seperation of homologous chromosomes in a diploid cell |
| Crossing Over | the chromatids from the homologous chromosomes cross over eachother |
| Zygote | this is created by fertilization |
