BPRVTHS transport
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| passive transport | movement across the cell membrane that does not require energy |
| concentration gradient | difference in concentration of a substance across a space |
| equilibrium | equal concentration of a substance on both sides of the cell membrane |
| diffusion | movement of a substance from high to low concentration by random motion of particles (with the concentration gradient) |
| osmosis | diffusion of water through selectively permeable membrane |
| hypertonic | a solution that causes a cell to shrink because of osmosis (high concentration of dissolved particles outside the cell causes water to move out of the cell) |
| hypotonic | a solution that causes a cell to swell because of osmosis (low concentration of dissolved particles outside of the cell, causes water to enter the cell) |
| isotonic | a solution that causes no change in cell volume because of osmosis (equal concentration on both sides) |
| ion channel | transport protein that allows ions to pass through |
| facilitated diffusion | uses carrier proteins to transport substances from high to low concentration |
| active transport | movement of substances against concentration gradient (from low to high concentration) |
