What is the job of the digestive system? to digest food
What is an Accessory Organ? Name them. And organ in which food does NOT pass through. Pancreas, Liver, Appendix
What causes constipation? Lack of water, fiber, or exercise
What causes diarrhea? too MUCH water
What causes Colon Cancer? Uncontrolled ceel growth(tumor)
What causes heartburn? eating right before bed, acidic foods, and overeating
What causes a gastric ulcer? Bacteria
Why is the digestive system important to us? Without the digestive system, we would not be able to digest food and would therefore die.
Teeth breaks down food into smaller peices through mechanical digestion
Saliva has enzyme that begins chemical digestion of carbohydrates and turns complex carbs into simple carbs.
Esophagus tube that transports food from mouth to the stomach
Stomach squeezes its contents with muscular contractions to physically and mechanically digest food (stomach acid) produces chyme
Pancreas produces pancreatic juice that nuetralizes acid in chyme producing bile
Liver Produces and secretes bile
Gall stores bile and then squeezes it into the small intestine
Small intestine absorbs nutrients from food through chemical digestion
Large Intestine stores, compacts, and then eliminates indigestible material from the body
Appendix (unecessary)
Rectum stores food until it can be excreted from the body
Anus rids of food waste from body (butthole)
Bile a substance that breaks up fat particles
Villi tiny finger shaped structures that line the inner surface of the small intestine. They absorb nutrient molecules.
Enzyme a protein that produces chemical digestion insubstances
Vitamin an organic substance that supports nutrients in body
Mineral a nutrient that is nonorganic and is essential to function of the body
Chyme the after product of food after chemicl and physicl digestion in the stomach
Mastication chewing
Chemical Digestion The breaking down of chemicals into smaller chemicals
Mechanical Digestion The physical breaking down of an object
Vitiman A Found in: dairy products; eggs; liver; yellow , orange and dark green veggies; fruits Purpose: maintains healthy skin, bones, teeth and hair,aids vision in dim light
Vitiman C Found in: citrus fruits, tomatoes, potatoes, dark green veggies, mangoes Purpose: needed to form connective tissue and fight infection
Vitiman D Found in: fortified dairy products; fish; eggs; liver; made by skin cells exposed to sunlight Purpose: maintains bones and teeth; helps in the use of calcium and phosphorus
Vitiman E Found in: vegetable oils; margarine ; green, leafy veggies; whole-grain foods; seeds; nuts Purpose: Aids in maintenance of red blood cells
