Functions of Organelles

rough ER produce phospholipids and proteins, synthesize and transport ribosomes
smooth ER lipids and hormone synthesis
ribosome site of protein synthesis, composed of RNA and proteins
cell membrane protects cell, selectively permeable, composed of a phospholipid bi-layer
vacuole stores water and nutrients
microfilaments and microtubules provide structure for cell
lysosomes digest/break down and reuse old organelles
chloroplast site of photosynthesis
cell wall provide and maintain the shape of a plant cell, protective barrier, gives plant rigidity
