Ecology Vocab Unit
| ecology | The study of how organisms interact with each other and their environment. |
| biotic factor | A living parts of an ecosystem. |
| abiotic factor | A nonliving part of an ecosystem. |
| population | A group of organisms of the same species that live in the same area. |
| community | All the populations that live and interact with each other in a particular place. |
| ecosystem | All the living and nonliving things that interact in a particular environment. |
| carrying capacity | The largest number of individuals of a species that an area can support. |
| limiting factor | Biotic and abiotic factors that limit the number of individuals that can live in an ecosystem. |
| organism | An individual form of life |
| competition | A type of interaction that occurs when organisms in an ecosystem need the same resource to survive. |
| predator | An animal that hunts and eats another animal to survive. |
| mutualism | A relationship that occurs where 2 organisms both benefit from the activity of the other. |
| parasite | A living thing that lives off of a host organism, which can harm or kill the host. |
| herbivore | An organism that eats only plants. |
| omnivore | An organism that eats plants and animals. |
| carnivore | An organism that eats meat. |
| producer | An organism, such as a plant, that makes it's own food for an ecosystem. |
| consumer | An organism that eats other living things. |
| food web | A model showing MANY possible paths of energy in an ecosystem. |
| energy pyramid | A model to show the way that energy decreases as it moves up the food chain. |
| food chain | A model showing ONE path of energy from the sun to producer to primary consumer to secondary consumer to top predator. |
