| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| organism | A living thing |
| habitat | The place where an organism lives provides food, shelter, and appropriate amount of heat and moisture |
| biotic factor | A living or once living part of an organisms habitat. Ex. tree, soil |
| abiotic factor | A nonliving part of an organisms habitat. Ex. a rock |
| species | A group of similar organisms that can mate with each other and produce offspring that can also mate and reproduce. Ex. Black Bears |
| population | All the members of one species living in the same area. |
| community | All the different populations that live together in a particular place. |
| ecosystem | The community of organisms that live in a particular area. It ncludes the living and non living parts of an environment. |
| ecology | The study of how organisms interact with each other and their environment. |
| natural selection | The process by which organims that are best adapted to their environment are most likely to survive and reproduce. |
| adaptation | An inhertied behavior or physical characteristic that helps and organism survive and reproduce in its environment. |
| niche | How an organism makes its living and interacts with the biotic and abiotic factors in its habitat. |
| competition | The struggle between organisms to survive as they use the same resources for food, water, habitat in the same place at the same time. |
| predation | When on organism preys on another organism and cause harm |
| predator | The organism that does the killing in a predation interaction. Ex. Wolf |
| prey | An organism that is killed and eaten by another organism in a predation interaction. Ex. Deer |
| symbiosis | A close, long term association between two or more species |
| mutualism | A type of symbiosis in which both species benefit from living together. |
| commensalism | A type of interaction between two species in which one species benefits and the other species is not harmed or helped. Ex. |
| parasitism | A symbiotic relationship where one organism benefits and other is harmed. Ex. Tick on a Human |
| parasite | The organism that benefits by living in, with, on another organism. Ex. Tick |
| host | An organism that a parasite lives with, in, or on. Ex. Deer (The Tick lives on/in it) |
| producer | Organisms that create their own food Changes energy from sunlight into chemical energy or food. Ex. plants |
| consumer | An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organism. |
| herbivore | A consumer that eats ONLY plants |
| carnivore | A consumer that obtains energy by eating ONLY animals. Ex. Wolf eating a Deer |
| omnivore | a consumer that east BOTH plants and animals |
| decomposer | An organism that break down wastes and dead organisms and return the raw materials to the environment. Ex. Volture |
| food chain | A series of events in an ecosytem that shows the tranfer of energy by eating and by being eaten. |
| food web | A diagram that shows the feeding relationship between organisms in an ecosystem |
| energy pyramid | A diagram that shows the amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another in the food web |
| biodiversity | The total number of different species on Earth, include those on land, in water, and in the air. |
| carrying capactiy | the largest population an environment can support or (CARRY) |
