Organelle Function

Cell Organelles and Their Functions

QuestionAnswer
What is the basic unit of life? A cell
What surrounds a cell, is semipermeable, and is composed of a double layer of phospholipids and embedded proteins? The cell, plasma, or phospholipid membrane
What is only in a plant cell and surrounds the cell membrane? It isn't selectively permeable and it also creates structure. The cell wall
What also makes up the cell wall? (Substance for structure) Cellulose
What is a small body located near the nucleus that is also known as the microtubule organizing center? Centrosome
What is cell division also called? Mitosis
Which types of cells contain centrosomes? Animal cells
What are shaped like soda straws and give the nucleus and cell its shape? Microtubules
What is the dense center of the centrosome? The centriole
What spherical body in the center of the cell controls many of the functions of the cell (by controlling protein synthesis? It contains DNA. Nucleus
What organelle is in the nucleus that makes ribosomes? Nucleolus
What membrane covers the nucleus and has nuclear pores that allow materials to pass through? The nuclear membrane
What is the jellylike material outside the cell nucleus in which the organelles are located? Cytoplasm
All cells, even prokaryotes, contain these small bodies that allow protein synthesis to occur. Ribosomes
What is the vast system of interconnected, membranous, infolded and convoluted sacs that are located in the cell's cytoplasm? It is covered with ribosomes, is continuous with the outher nuclear membrane, and transports materials throught the cell. The rough ER (endoplasmic reticulum)
What part of the rough ER produces proteins in sacs and then are transported to the Golgi? Cistern
What is a flattened, layerd, sac-like organelle that looks like a stack of pancakes? It modifies and packages pro. and carb. into mem. bound vesicles for export. Golgi bodies/apparatus/complex
What does not have ribosomes on its surface, makes proteins and lipids that will be exported, and controls the calcium level in muscles and detoxifies poisons, alcohol, and drugs? The smooth ER
What organelle is elongated or disc shaped and traps sunlight? It is only in a plant cell. Chloroplast
What chemical allows photosynthesis to take place? It is green. Chlorophyll
What is photosynthesis? Chemical reaction changing sunlight into food for a plant
What are fluid filled sacs that fill with food to be digested or waste material? It is large in a plant cell, and small or nonexistant in an animal cell. Vacuole
What is a spherical or rod-shaped organelle with a double membrane and has cristae in it? It converts glucose into ATP (chem energy) for the cell. Mitochondria
What organelle digests material? Lysosomes

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
