Life is Celluar

QuestionAnswer
Cell theory all living things are composed of cells, cells are the basic structure and function of living things and new cells are produced from existing cells
Cell Membrane thin, flexible barrier around the cell, protection and support
Cell Wall (plant) strong layer surrounding the cell membrane. made of fiber and protein.
Nucleus large structure in the middle of the cell that has the genetic material and controls all the cell activities. DNA information, makes proteins
Cytoplasm material inside the membrane that is liquidity and contains the other cell structures
Eukaryotes have dozens of organelles , has nucleus, membrane and cytoplasm
Prokaryote smaller and simpler, all bacteria, has no nucleus
Nucleolus ribosomes aid in the production of proteins with in the cell, Assembly of ribosomes
Nuclear Envelope double membrane, sends a stream of RNA allows material in and out of the cell through pores
Cytoskeleton helps support cell, a network of protein filaments maintain shape, involve in movement, important in cell division
Microfilaments long thin fibers that function in the movement and support of the cell
Endoplasmic Reticulm organelle in which components of the cell membrane are assembled and proteins are modified, rough - ribs are present soft= enzymes preform tasks with lipids
Golgi Apparatus enzymes attach carbs to lipids to proteins
Lysosomes break down lipids, carbs and proteins from food into particles used for cells, break down old organelles that are not useful
Vacuoles water, salts, proteins and carbs are stored in, plants have large central and vesicles are smaller and transport substance with in the cell
Chloroplasts energy from sunlight to make energy rich food molecules in a process of photosynthesis
Mitochondria energy from food to make energy compounds that cell can use to power growth plant cells
Diffusion regulates the movement of molecules, causes many substances to move across but does not require e energy, move to area where they are more concentrated to an area where they are less concentrated
Osmosis diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane,
Selectivity Preamble when some substances can pass across the membrane while others cannot -> impermeable
Isotonic same strength
Hypertonic above strength
Hypotonic below strength
Osmotic pressure pressure on the hypertonic side of a selectively permeable membrane
Facilitated Diffusion hundred d of different protein channel shave been found that allow ions sugars and salts to cross various membrane
Active Transport material that moves from an area o f lower concentration to an area of greater concentration NEEDS ENERGY
Phagicytsosis large particles taken
Excotyosis removal of large amounts of material

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
