The Nature of Heredity

| • heredity | traits are passed from parent to offspring |
| • genetics | the study of heredity and variation |
| • DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) (double helix) | composed of phosphates and sugars as the sides of the ladder, nitrogenous bases as the rungs of the ladder |
| • gene | portion of DNA that carries info to help produce a particular trait |
| • locus | found on a chromosome and this section carries information for hundreds or thousands of genes |
| • haploid (N) | contains half the number of chromosomes |
| • diploid (2N) | contains 2N of the chromosomes |
| • polyploids | 3 or more sets of chromosomes (usually occurs with plants) |
| • asexual reproduction | new individual produced from single parent by cell division |
| • sexual reproduction | individuals are produced from the fusion of two sex cells (i.e., egg and sperm cells) |
