Enzymes
a list of enzymes and their functions
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Helicase | Unwinds double stranded DNA |
| Single Stranded DNA binding proteins | Bind to the single stranded DNA that has split to prevent it from reforming into a double helix. |
| Topoisomerase | Unwinds double stranded DNA and introduces temporary single stranded nicks in DNA to unkink it. |
| Primase | Makes short RNA primers which are short pieces of RNA to which dNTP’s are added. |
| DNA Polymerase | An enzyme that adds dNTP’s (DNA Triphosphates) to a piece of nucleic acid. |
| DNA Polymerase III | Main enzyme involved in the making of DNA. Has polymerase activity involved in adding primers to make a new strand DNA, also has exonuclease activity that removes bases that do nOt match. (PROOFREADING) |
| DNA Polymerase I | Removes RNA primer and fills that gap with DNA. Its polymerase activity is to add the pieces of newly made DNA on both sides of the leading and lagging strands. |
| DNA Ligase | Connects pieces of DNA together by making the last phosphodiester bond. |
