Cell Organelles
| cell organelle | function |
|---|---|
| cell membrane | semi-permeable, allows certain substances in and out of the cell |
| cell wall | permeable, non-living layer in plant cells only, gives plant structure |
| chloroplast | in plants only, contains chlorophyll, photosynthesis occurs here |
| cytoplasm | made of 80% water, holds organelles in place |
| endoplasmic reticulum | extension of the nuclear membrane, canals that move substances such as proteins |
| Golgi body | activates, packages, and adds a chemical tag to proteins |
| lysosome | only in animal cells, contain digestive enzymes |
| mitochondria | site of cellular respiration, breaks down glucose to release energy |
| nucleus | contains DNA, controls cell processes |
| ribosome | creates inactive protein, found on ER and in the cytoplasm |
| nuclear membrane | selectively permeable, surrounds the nucleus, protects the DNA inside the nucleus |
| vacuole | bigger in plants, storage area for water, food and waste products |
