Ch. 5.3 Lipids
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Lipids | One of a class of hydrophobic biomolecules (including triglycerides, fats, oils, steroids, etc.) |
| Hydrophobic | Water-avoiding; a property of certain molecules or functional groups that are non-polar. |
| Fat | Glycerol + 3 fatty acids; rich in hydrocarbons; used for long term energy storage and insulation |
| Saturated fats | Fats that have a maximum amount of hydrogen-carbon bonds; usually derived from animals; solid at room temperature |
| Unsaturated Fats | Fats that have double bonds in fatty acids; "kinks" in lipids; found in plant and fish; usually liquid at room temperature |
| Steroid | Lipid molecule made of four carbon rings fused together with a functional group; serve as chemical messengers |
| Cholesterol | Lipid found in cell membranes that can help make steroids; can cause blockages in blood vessels. |
| Phospholipid; Lipid Bilayer | Lipid made of 2 hydrophobic fatty acids bonded to a hydrophilic head. Important in cell membrane function. |
