Antigen any substance that is foreign to the body which stimulates the production of specific antibodies by the immune system
Agglutinogen an antigen whos presence results in the formation of an agglutinin
Antibody protein made by the immune system against a specific antigen (AKA immunoglobulin)
Agglutinin a substance ( as an antibody) producing agglutination
Complement the thermolabile group of proteins in normal blood serum and plasma that in combination with antibodies that causes the destruction esp. of particulate antigens
Cytolysis extracellular fluid flows into the target cell and the cell burst
Diapedesis the passage of blood cells through capillary walls through the tissues
Histamine substance found in many cells, especially mast cells, basophils, and platelets, that is released when the cells are injured. It results in vasodilation, increased permeability of blood vessels, and constriction of bronchioles
Immunity the state of being resistant to injury, particularly by poisons, foreign proteins, and invading pathogens
Lacteal lymphatic vessels in villi of the intestines that absorb triglycerides and other lipids from digested food
Leukemia malignant disease of the blood
Lymph fluid confined in the lymphatic vessels and flowing through the lymphatic system until it is returned to the blood
Lysozyme a bactericidal enzyme found in tears, saliva, and perspiration
Macrophage phagocytic cell derived from a monocyte, may be fixed or wandering
Mononucleosis an abnormal increase of mononuclear white blood cells in the blood
Pathogen a disease producing microbe
Perforin a protein that inserts into the plasma membrane on the target cell and creates channels (perforations) in the membrane
Phagocytosis the ingestion of microbes or other particles such as cellular debris
Phlebotomist one who practices the letting of blood
Septicemia invasion of a bloodstream by virulent microorganisms from a focus of infection that is accompanied by acute septic illness, also called blood poisoning
Universal donor a person who has RH
Universal recipient a person who has RH
