Water Properties
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Inorganic | Molecule that does not contain a carbon |
| Molecule | Simplest structure composed of elements to make a compound. (When 2 or more elements stick together) |
| Polarity | A molecule with both positive & negative charges |
| pH | Measure of H+ ions |
| Cohesion | When one water droplet is attracted to another water droplet |
| Adhesion | When water sticks to other surfaces |
| Surface Tension | When water clumps together in drops instead of lining up next to one another |
| Density | Mass per unit |
| Capillary Action | Allows water and dissolvd substances to move throughout an organism against gravity (needs the help of cohesion and adhesion) |
| Universal Solvent | Dissolves more substances than any other liquid because of polarity changes |
| Hydrophilic | A polar substances attraction to water causing it to dissolve easily (water love) |
| Hydrophobic | A non-polar substance that repels water. Causing that substance to not dissolve in water (water fear) |
| Solvent | A substance that can dissolve other substances |
| Solutes | A substance that is dissolved by solvents |
