Anabolism Provides all of the materials required for cellular growth and repair.
Dehydration Synthesis Joins many simple sugar molecules to form larger molecules of glycogen.
Catabolic Metabolism Breaks down larger molecules into smaller ones.
Hydrolysis Can decompose carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins.
Enzymes Protein that catalyzes a specific biochemical reaction.
Substrate Target of enzyme action.
Energy The ability to do work.
Cellular Respiration The process that transfers energy from molecules such as glucose and makes it available for cellular use.
Glycolysis The energy-releasing breakdown of glucose to pyruvic acid during cellular respiration.
Phosphorylation Metabolic process that adds a phosphate to an organic molecule.
Electron Transport Chain Series of oxidation-reduction reactions that takes high-energy electrons from glycolysis and the sitric acid cycle to form water and ATP.
Anaerobic Absence of molecular oxygen.
Aerobic Presence of molecular oxygen.
