Biomolecules
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Organic Molecules | Carbon-based molecules commonly found in living organisms. |
| Inorganic Molecules | Non-carbon based carbon molecules, like water (H2O) or ammonia (NH3) |
| Hydrocarbons | Organic molecules made only of carbon and hydrogen. |
| Functional Group | A group of atoms within a molecule that interacts in predictable ways with other molecules (Hydroxyls, amino, etc.) |
| Hydrophilic | Property in which water is attracted by a molecule or part of a molecule; "water-loving" hydroxyls |
| Hydrophobic | Property in which water is repelled or not attracted by a molecule or part of a molecule; fats |
| Monomers | Small molecular unit that builds larger molecules (monosachrides etc.) |
| Polymer | Long chained macromolecules made by linking many monomers together |
| Dehydration Reaction (Synthesis) | The process of building polymers by linking monomers together and releasing water. |
| Hydrolysis Reaction | Process of breaking a polymer down into smaller units by adding water. |
