Unit 3 Cells JH

Honors Bio

QuestionAnswer
Basic unit of life
Eukaryotes Cells that contain a nucleus
Prokaryotes Cells that do not contain nuclei
Organelles
Cytoplasm Jelly-like substance that surrounds the organelles
Nuclear Envelope Surronds the nucleus
Chromatin Consists of DNA bound to protein
Chromosomes Contain genetic information that is passed from one generation of cells to the next
Nucleolus Inside the nucleus. Produces ribosomes.
Ribosomes Small particles of RNA that produce protein
Endoplasmic Reticulum(ER) Where lipid components of the cell membrane are assemble, along with proteins and other materials that are exported from the cell
Nucleolus Inside the nucleus. Produces ribosomes.
Ribosomes Small particles of RNA that produce protein
Endoplasmic Reticulum(ER) Where lipid components of the cell membrane are assemble, along with proteins and other materials that are exported from the cell
Golgi Apparatus After proteins are made in the rough ER they are sent into here
Lysosomes Small organelle filled with enzymes
Vacuole Mostly found in plant cells, is the storage of the cell
Mitochondria "Power House" of cell, converts energy inot compounds that are more convienant for cells to use
Chloroplasts Green organelles in cells that complete photosynthesis
Cytoskeleton Is the structure of the cell
Centrioles Organelles that help in cell division
Cell Membrane A thin, flexile barrier that surrounds all cell
Cell Wall A strong supporting layer around the cell
Lipid bilayer A double layered sheet that cell membranes have
Concentration The mass of solute in a given volume of something
Diffusion The process when particles move from an area of high concentration to an area of less concentration
Equilibrium When the conentration of a solute is the same throughout the system, the system has reached this
Osmosis The diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane
Istonic When two solutions become the same strength
Hypertonic When a solution is above strength
Hypotonic When a solution is below strength
Facilitated Diffusion The diffusion of glucose across the membrane
Active Transport Against concentration
Endocytosis Process of taking material into the cell by means
Phagocytosis Extensions of cytoplasm surround a particle
Pinocytosis Pockets form along the cell membrane and pinch off to form vacuoles
Exocytosis Membrane of the vacuole surrounding the material fuses with the cell membrane
Cell Specialization Cells throughout an organism can develop to preform different tasks
Tissue A group of similar cells that preform particular functions
Organ Many tissue working together to preform a task
Organ System A group of organs that can work together to perform a specific function

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
