Chapter 4 Tissues
Tissues, Glands, and Membranes
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Epithelium or epithelial tissue | one of four major tissue types, extracellular material, and no blood vessels; covers the surfaces of the body and forms glands |
| Functions of Epithelial tissue | 1. Protecting underlying structures. 2. Acting as barriers. 3. Permitting the passage of substances. 4. Secreting substances |
| SImple Epithelium | single layer of cells |
| Stratified Epithelium | more than one layer of cells |
| Squamous | flat |
| Cuboidal | square |
| Columnar | tall and skinny |
| Gland | a multicellular structure that secretes substances onto a surface |
| Hormones | carried by the blood to other parts of the body |
| Endocrine Glands | no ducts and empty their secretions into the blood |
| Collagen Fibers | microscopic ropes, are flexible but resist stretching |
| Reticular Fibers | fine, short, collagen fibers that branch to form a support network |
| Elastic Fibers | have a structure similar to coiled metal bed springs |
| Membrane | thin sheet or layer of tisse that covers a structure or lines a cavity |
| Mucus Membrane | consist of various kinds of epithelium resting on a thick layer of loose connective tissue |
| Serous Membrane | consist of simple squamous epithelium resting on a delicate layer of loose connective tissue |
