Chapter 4 (Tissues, Glands, and Membrane)
| Question | Description |
|---|---|
| Epithelium or epithelial tissue | It covers internal and external surfaces, and also forms most glands |
| What are the functions of Epithelial tissue | 1. Protection 2. Acting as barriers 3. Permitting the passage of substances 4. Secreting substances 5. Absorbing substances |
| Simple Epithelium | A single layer of cells |
| Stratified epithelium | Mora than one layer of epithelial cells |
| Squamous | When the epithelium based on cell shape is flat |
| Cuboidal | When the epithelium based on cell shape is cubelike |
| Columnar | When the epithelium based on cell shape is tall and thin |
| Simple squamous epithelium | A single layer of thin, flat cells |
| Simple cuboidal epithelium | A single layer of cubelike cells |
| Single columnar epithelium | A single layer of tall, thin cells |
| Pseudostratified columnar epithelium | A special type of simple epitheloum. Pseudo- means false, so it appears to be stratified but it's not |
| Stratified squamous epithelium | Forms a thick epithelium because it consists of many layers of cells |
| Gland | Is a multicellular structure that secretes substances onto a surface |
| Hormones | The secretions that are carried by the blood |
| Endocrine Glands | Glands have no ducts and empty their secretions into the blood |
| Collagen Fibers | Flexible but resist stretching |
| Reticular Fibers | Very fine, short, collagen fibers that branch ti form a supporting network |
| Elastic Fibers | Have a structure similar to coiled metal bed springs. Have the ability to recoil to their original shape |
| Function of Connective Tissue | 1. Enclosing and separating 2. Connecting tissues to one another 3.Supporting and moving 4. Storing 5. Cushioning and insulating 6. Transporting 7. Protecting |
| Dense collagenous tissue | An extracellular matrix consisting mostly of collagen fibers |
| Dense elastic connective tissue | Has abundant elastic fibers among collagen fibers |
| Loose or areolar connective tissue | Are widely separated from one another |
| Adipose Tissue | Has a matrix with protein fibers, it is not a typical connective tissue |
| Cartilage | Is composed of cartilage cells |
