Ecology notecards

QuestionAnswer
What is Ecology? Scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their enviroments.
What is Biosphere? Combined portions of the planet in which all of life exists.
What is a Species? A group of organisms so similar to one another that they can breed and produce fertile offspring.
What is a population? groups of indivuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area.
What is a community? assembles of different populations that live together in a defined area.
What is a ecosytem? Collection of all the organisms that live in a particular place, together with onliving enviroment.
What is Autotroph? capture enrgy from sunlight and use it to create food.
What is a heterotroph? Organsims that rely on other organisms for their energy and food supply.
What is a food web? Feeding relationships among the various organisms in an ecosystem form a network of complex interactions.
What is a trophic level? Each step in a food chain
What is a biomass? Total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level.
What is biogeochemical cycle? Forms of matter are passed from one organisms to another and from one part of the biosphere to another.
What is Limiting nutrient? When an ecosystem is limited by a single nutrient that is scarce or cycles very slowly.
What is weather? The day-to-day condition of earths atmosperes at a particular time and place.
Climate refers to average year to year conditons of temperature and precitpitation.
Greenhouse effect Natural situation in which heat is retained by this layer of greenhouse gases.
Biotic factor Biologic influences on organisms within an ecosystem
