Ecology Flash Cards

QuestionAnswer
What is Ecology Ecology is the scientific study of interactions among organisms and their environment or surroundings.
What is a biosphere? part of Earth in which life exists including land, water, and air or atmosphere.
What is a species? A group of organisms so similar to one another that they can breed and produce fertile offspring.
What is a population? Groups of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area.
What is community? Assemblages of different populations that live in together in a defined area.
What is a ecosystem? Collection of all organisms that live in a particular place, together with their nonliving environment.
What is an autotroph? organisms that capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and use it to produce its own food from inorganic compounds; also called a producer.
What is a heterotroph? organisms that rely on other organisms for their energy and food supply.
What is a food web? Network of complex interactions formed by the feeding relationships among the various organisms in an ecosystem
What is a trophic level? Each level in a food chain or food web.
What is biomass? The total amount of living thing tissue within a given trophic level.
What is a biogeochemical cycle? process in which elements, chemical compounds, and other forms of matter are passed from one organism to another and from one part of the biosphere to another.
What is a limiting nutrient? single nutrient that either is scare or cycles very slowly, limiting the growth of organisms in an ecosystem.
What is weather? the day-to-day condition of Earth's atmoshere at a particular time and place.
What is climate? average year-to-year precipitation and temperature in a certain area.
What is the greenhouse affect? the natural situation in which the heat is retained by a layer of the atmosphere.
What are biotic factors? the biological influences or organisms that affect an ecosystem.
What are abiotic factors? physical or non-living, factors that affect the ecosystem.
What is a habitat? the area in which an organism lives.
What is a niche? the full range of physical and biological conditions in which an organism lives and uses those conditions.
What is a resource? a necessity of life.
What is a competitive exclusion principle? no two species can occupy the same territory at won time without competition.
What is a predation? when one organism captures and feeds on another organism.
What is a symbiosis? a relationship in which two species live close together.
What is mutualism? when both species benefit from the relationship.
What is commensalism? one member of the association benefits and the other is neither helped nor harmed.
What is parasitism? one organism benefits and the other is harmed.
