Unit 2 flashcards
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is Ecology? | The scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment, or surroundings |
| What is a bioshpere? | It contains the combined portions of the planet in which all of life exists, including land, water, and air aka oxygen |
| What is a species? | A group of organisms so similar to one another that they can breed and produce fertile offspring |
| What is a population? | Groups of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area |
| What is a community? | Assemblages or different populations that live together in a defined area |
| What is an ecosystem? | A collection of all the organisms that live in a particular place, together with their nonliving, or physical environment |
| What are autotrophs? | Organisms that use energy from the environment to fuel the asssembly of simple inorganic compounts into complex organic molecules |
| What are heterotrophs? | Organisms that rely on other organisms for their energy and food supply |
| What is a food web? | Links all the food chains in an ecosystem together |
| Whta is trophic level? | Each step in a food chain or web |
| What is biomass? | The total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level |
| What is bigeochemical cycle? | Elements, chemical compounds, and other forms of matter passed from one organism to another from one part of a biosphere to another |
| What are limiting nutrients? | A single nutrient that is scarce or cycles very slowly |
| What is weather? | the day-to-day condition of Earth's atmosphere at a particular time and place |
| What is climate? | The average, year-to-year conditions of temperatrue and precipitation on a particular region |
| What is greenhouse effect? | The natural situation in which heat is retained by this layr of greenhouse gases |
| What are biotic factors? | The biological infleuces on organisms within an ecosystem |
| What are abiotic factors? | Physical, or nonliving, factors that shape ecosystem |
| What is a niche? | The full range of physican and biological conditions in which an organism uses those conditions |
| What is logistic growth? | Something that occurs when a population's growth slows or stops following a period of exponential growth |
| What is carrying capacity? | The number that represents the largest number of individuals that a given enviroment can support |
| What is demographic transition? | A dramatic change in birth and death rates |
| What is demography? | The scientific study of human population |
| What is green revolution? | The effor to use modern agricultural techniques |
| what are renewabel resources? | Resources that can regenerate if they are alive or can be replentished by biochemical cycles if they are nonliving |
| What is pollutant? | Harmful material that can enter a biosphere through the land, air, or water |
| What is biodiversity? | The sum total of the genetically based variety of all organisms in the bioshere |
| What is biological magnification? | The concentrations of a harmful substance increased in organisms at higher trophic levels in a food chain or food web |
