| biomass | an organic material that has been produced in an ecosystem |
| net primary productivty | the rate at which biomass accumulates in an ecosystem |
| consumer | a consumer that eats other organisms or organic matter instead of producing its own nutrients or obtaining nutrients form inorganic sources |

| trophic level | anorganisms relative position in a sequence of energy transfers in a food chain or food pyramid, exmaples include producers and primary, secondary, and tertiary consumers |
| food chain | a single pathway of feeeding relationships among organisms in an ecosystem that results in an energy transfer |
| food web | interrelated food chains in an ecosystem |
